East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department

The East Herkimer Volunteer Fire Department, founded in 1931, provides services to 32.2 square miles in the Town of Herkimer, not including the 2.8 square miles covered by the Village of Herkimer. EHFD also responds to mutal aid calls in the neighboring Mohawk Fire Department area and as requested by other agencies.The department operates out of one station with 5 trucks, has 40 members, and an active Ladies' Auxiliary. EHFD is an ISO Class 5/8B department.

The Department of Public Works and its dedicated employees work hard keeping up with the needs of the Town through every changing season. Services include town street maintenance, sanitation, sanitary sewer maintenance, and making sure town parks and right of ways stay aesthetically pleasing for the community and visitors alike, just to name a few.

Seasonal Activities:

WINTER
During the winter months, the DPW plows and maintains 20 miles of Town streets

1.) Plowing snow or blowing snow into the street is unsafe and against the law.
2.) Removal of snow from sidewalks is the homeowners responsibility.

CHRISTMAS TREES
1.) Pickup begins the week after Christmas. Put trees to side of the road.
2.) Please, no metal, plastic, or lights left on trees, for the reason that the trees are chipped for compost pile.

SPRING
All roads in the Town are swept to remove the winter debris as soon as weather allows.
Parks and Town parking lots are cleaned of sanding material.

SUMMER

Greenwaste pickup will be on Mondays of every week, as soon as the county compost site opens. APRIL to OCTOBER 15.

FALL
Leaf Pickup
1.) Leaves need to be raked to the road curbside, NOT INTO THE STREET.
2.) NO GREENWASTE WILL BE PICKED UP DURING LEAF SEASON.

All Trucks are serviced and inspected for safety in preparation for the winter season.
